Short answer: Choose an accredited programme, check its exact tuition and language, and arrange entry and residence through your institution where required. Fees and scholarships depend on the programme and your status; a student permit does not allow unrestricted work.
Studying in Cyprus involves separate decisions about admission, qualification recognition, immigration, fees and housing. Compare the offer for your chosen intake before paying a deposit.
What Universities Are in Cyprus?
The Department of Higher Education lists the University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology and Open University of Cyprus as public universities. Its private-university information includes Frederick, European University Cyprus, University of Nicosia, Neapolis University Pafos, UCLan Cyprus and Philips University, with further institutions linked in its directory. Use the live directory rather than a fixed total from an older article.
Check the exact programme in CYQAA’s accredited bachelor’s programme records, or the relevant record for another qualification level. The records include programme title, degree, reference number, language, accreditation commencement and expiry, and supporting reports. Historical and later accreditation entries can appear together; read the dates and conditions rather than assuming every listed entry covers your intake.
For example, the bachelor’s register lists CUT’s Communication and Marketing programme in Greek, with accreditation from autumn 2026/27 to spring 2031. It also lists UCLan Cyprus Business Administration in English for the same accreditation period. Language and approval are programme-specific, not a guarantee that every course at the institution is taught in English.
How Much Are Tuition Fees?
These are published examples checked on 3 October 2026, not a market-wide tuition range:
| Institution and study level | Published fee and scope |
|---|---|
| UCY undergraduate, Cypriot and other EU students | €1,709 per semester, paid by the Republic of Cyprus in the 2026–2028 guide |
| UCY undergraduate, students who are not citizens of Cyprus or another EU Member State | €3,417 per semester in the 2026–2028 guide |
| UCY conventional master’s programmes | €5,125 for the programme, with exceptions and additional charges specified by programme |
| UCLan Cyprus undergraduate, 2026/27, local/EU and non-EU | €9,000 per year of 60 ECTS after the €950 annual bursary, from the original €9,950 fee |
| UCLan Cyprus postgraduate, 2026/27, local/EU and non-EU | €9,500 for the 90-ECTS programme after the €1,000 bursary, from the original €10,500 fee; specified programmes have different fees |

Do not read the state-paid UCY amount as an invoice for every EU applicant or apply an undergraduate policy to a master’s programme. Confirm your classification and intake with admissions. Ask for a complete quote including application, registration, materials, examinations, placement, accommodation and other charges, plus the payment and refund terms.
What Is the Student Entry and Residence Process?
The Migration Department’s student guidance covers third-country nationals studying for more than 90 days. It describes an entry permit for a person accepted for full-time study leading to a higher-education qualification recognised by the Republic, with the application submitted by the institution. The institution must be registered with the Ministry of Education or recognised under the applicable rules.
The Department says an application may be submitted while the person is abroad or holds a valid residence permit in Cyprus. It cannot be submitted while the applicant is in Cyprus on a tourist or visiting visa. Do not assume arrival as a visitor is a substitute for the study-entry procedure.
After arrival, the Department instructs students to register in the Aliens’ Register and apply for temporary residence within seven days. Use the current forms and supporting-document lists with your institution. Check passport validity, financial evidence, insurance, medical tests, criminal-record documents and certification against the applicable checklist rather than applying one universal amount or validity period.
The Department distinguishes the following examination periods for duly completed applications:
- Entry permit: within one month; insufficient information or documents can extend examination.
- Residence permit: within three months.
The residence permit can be valid for up to one year, with annual renewal until the study programme is completed, subject to continuing eligibility. The Department checks sufficient academic progress among other conditions. Ask admissions for its own submission deadlines; these official examination periods do not guarantee an appointment or arrival date.
What Scholarships Are Available?
Check each award’s current call, eligibility, deadline and renewal conditions. The Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation’s published undergraduate 2025/26 call announced applications from 16 March to 8 April 2026. That dated call is not an open application window or evidence that all nationalities qualify for every state scholarship.
University discounts are also conditional. UCLan Cyprus’s 2026/27 page publishes programme-specific and merit-based awards as well as bursaries. It states that when more than one scholarship, discount or bursary applies, only the higher is used; undergraduate merit-award continuation depends on academic progress and the offer-letter conditions. Obtain confirmation of your award rather than adding several advertised discounts together.
For exchanges, ask your institution which partner agreements, programme places, grants and credit-transfer arrangements apply to your degree. Do not assume every university offers the same exchange duration or funding.
What Are the Part-Time Work Rules?
The Migration Department states that paid work is permitted outside study time, subject to the applicable activity rules. The relevant Ministerial decree determines the specific sectors and occupations; a general list of “student jobs” is not permission to take any vacancy.
The published maximum is 20 hours per week during classes and 38 hours per week during interruptions of classes. Before starting work, the student must sign a contract with an employer and submit it to a District Labour Office for approval. The study schedule must be attached. Confirm that the proposed role and hours comply with the current decree and your status before accepting work.
The Department also describes occasional domestic work in private households using a special form recording employers, dates, hours and remuneration. Follow that procedure if it applies rather than treating informal work as exempt from the rules.
How Should I Budget for Living Costs?
Request current accommodation offers for your campus and dates. Check the deposit, utility charges, contract length, cancellation terms and transport before comparing a room, shared flat or studio.
Build a monthly budget from actual quotes for housing, groceries, transport, communications and study materials. Include tuition payments and immigration costs separately, and allow for upfront costs. Check student-discount eligibility directly with the transport operator or provider. A single island-wide rent or bus-pass range would hide important differences in location and conditions.
Use our grocery guide and internet and mobile guide to compare specific options.
Will My Degree Be Recognised Abroad?
EU guidance explains that academic diplomas are not automatically recognised throughout the EU. A country may require its own recognition procedure for further study; recognition for a regulated profession follows different rules. Ask the receiving institution, national recognition centre or professional regulator about your exact qualification.
For a programme in northern Cyprus, check the institution, awarding body and receiving country’s rules directly before paying. Do not rely on a blanket claim that every degree is recognised only through Turkey, or that a university’s location alone establishes recognition throughout Europe. Compare evidence for the specific qualification rather than an unsupported average-quality ranking.
What Practical Steps Should I Take?
- Check your programme’s current accreditation record, language and entry requirements.
- Get a written fee and scholarship offer for your intake.
- Ask the institution to confirm the entry and residence process before travel.
- Verify qualification recognition for your intended next step.
- Obtain housing and living-cost quotes for the campus you will attend.
- Check the permitted employment procedure before signing a work contract.
