Short answer: For 2026–2027, compulsory pre-primary education starts at 4 years and 4 months, reached before 1 September. Public primary schooling lasts six years; general secondary schooling has two three-year cycles, Gymnasium and Lyceum. Choose a school and check immigration documentation separately.

Who can attend public schools?

The Ministry’s primary-school information states that attendance is compulsory for children of all nationalities living in Cyprus, regardless of whether their presence is legal or illegal. Attendance at public primary schools is free.

Its pre-primary information allows registration of children living permanently or temporarily in Cyprus, irrespective of origin or nationality. For 2026–2027, children below compulsory age but aged at least three before 1 September may apply; places depend on vacancies after compulsory-age registrations and transfers, with predetermined selection criteria. This is not a guaranteed place for every younger applicant.

The Ministry says public pre-primary education is free. Community pre-primary schools set their own fees. Ask each school about supplies, meals, transport and other arrangements before comparing your total budget.

What are the stages and starting ages?

The pre-primary class starts at age five; it is distinct from the wider compulsory pre-primary starting age. The published compulsory starting age remains 4 years and 4 months for 2027–2028, then falls in later school years. Check the year your child will actually attend.

The Ministry describes general secondary education as serving ages 12–18, with public attendance free for all classes and compulsory until age 15 or completion of the first cycle, whichever comes first. Ask the school about the child’s appropriate grade and prior schooling.

How do public-primary registrations and transfers work?

The Ministry’s primary-registration page says registrations take place in January, online and/or in person on dates announced annually. Each pupil registers in the school of their educational region. A proven reason for missing the registration period may be considered by the Chief Education Officer.

For a child born in Cyprus enrolling for the first time, the page requests an official birth certificate. For a child born abroad, it requests an Alien Registration Certificate (ARC) or another official document issued by the country of birth. Confirm the year’s complete application instructions and acceptable evidence with the school or District Education Office.

For a move, the page describes registration or transfer by the receiving head teacher after evidence of the parents’ relocation. Transfers creating class-size or other school problems need local District Education Office approval. Transfers for other reasons also follow the district approval procedure. Do not assume you can choose any public school without checking its region and transfer rules.

How should I compare public and private schools?

Ask about the language used for each subject, curriculum, qualification awarded, support for your child’s language level, class placement and the total fees. Do not assume every private school uses English or that a label such as “international” guarantees a particular qualification.

The Ministry’s private-education information explains that private primary and secondary schools require Ministry permission and Private Education Advisory Committee approval. It distinguishes schools following the same State curriculum, a similar curriculum covering at least two-thirds of the main subjects, and a different type applying another country’s education system.

The Secondary Education Department describes private schools as having their own curricula, syllabuses and fees according to type. Request a dated quotation including registration, tuition, books, examinations, transport and optional services. Check refund and withdrawal terms before paying.

For language support, the Secondary Education Department lists a “Greek for children with immigrant biography” programme. Ask the particular school which support your child can access; this does not establish a fixed adaptation time or guarantee the same provision everywhere.

Compare options in the school-comparison guide and city directory, then confirm directly with schools.

What school certificate is needed for a residence permit?

School admission and immigration permission require separate checks. Identify your child’s actual permit category and read its current supporting-document checklist before asking a school for a certificate.

For example, the digital-nomad dependent-child checklist requests a copy of registration or attendance certification from an academic institution in Cyprus or abroad only for pupils or students. This appears in both its initial-application and renewal lists. It does not establish a universal certificate requirement, a free certificate, or permission to remain dependent after turning 18.

Ask the responsible immigration authority whether a proposed certificate covers your circumstances, including a future school year, boarding school or an adult student’s application. Ask the school when it can issue the document and what the enrolment and payment commitments are. Check accommodation evidence separately; do not assume that the child’s name is always unnecessary on every relevant document.

See the residence-permit guide and the guide for your particular route.

Does school attendance establish citizenship eligibility?

Do not treat school attendance as a promise of citizenship. Check the applicable naturalisation route and its language-evidence conditions separately. For adult language learning, see the Greek-learning guide; for current certification arrangements, see the Greek-exam guide.

What should I check for university study?

The Department of Higher Education lists the University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology and Open University of Cyprus as public universities. Its private-university list includes Frederick, European University Cyprus and Neapolis University Pafos.

Check the particular programme’s admission requirements, language, tuition and accreditation, then the applicant’s immigration route. Do not assume holding a residence permit creates preferential admissions or tuition conditions.

Are diplomas automatically recognised throughout the EU?

No. Your Europe, checked on 2 June 2026, explains that academic diplomas have no automatic EU-wide recognition. Another country’s national procedure may be required for further study. Contact the destination’s ENIC/NARIC centre or admitting institution before committing to a course.

Professional recognition is governed by a different set of rules. Ask the relevant professional regulator which qualifications and supporting documents it requires; an apostille alone does not answer a recognition question.

How should I plan a school trip abroad?

Check each child’s nationality, passport, residence status and full itinerary with the destination and transit authorities. Ask the organiser which specific group-travel rule it proposes to use, whether it applies to that child and what documents are required. Do not rely on an anonymous account of a different child’s embassy decision or assume all Russian-passport transit cases have the same outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a school certificate for my child’s residence permit?

Check the current checklist for your child’s permit category. For example, the digital-nomad dependent-child checklist requests a copy of registration or attendance certification from an academic institution in Cyprus or abroad only for pupils or students, at both initial application and renewal.

Can expat children attend state schools in Cyprus?

Public primary attendance is free and compulsory for children of all nationalities living in Cyprus, regardless of immigration status. Public pre-primary registration is available to children living permanently or temporarily in Cyprus, irrespective of nationality; younger children’s places depend on vacancies and selection criteria.

At what age is school compulsory in Cyprus?

For 2026–2027, compulsory pre-primary education starts at 4 years and 4 months, reached before 1 September. Grade 1 starts at age 6, reached before 1 September. The Ministry describes secondary attendance as compulsory until age 15 or completion of its first cycle, whichever comes first.
