Before paying for a service or sending identity documents, check who you are dealing with through an independently obtained contact. The suggestions below are precautions, not a statistical ranking of scams or proof that every private recommendation is fraudulent.

How do I check a lawyer?

The government advocate guide says the Cyprus Bar Association keeps the Register of Practicing Advocates and issues annual practising licences. Ask it to confirm current practising status; finding a name in a different register is not the same check.

Before engaging a lawyer:

  1. Ask for the person’s full professional name and registration details.
  2. Independently confirm the firm’s phone number, office and payment details.
  3. Request written terms covering the work, fee, payment schedule and any cancellation or refund arrangements.
  4. Ask about unexpected payment instructions before transferring money.

Treat pressure, inconsistent identity details or an unexplained change of payee as reasons to pause and investigate. An unsolicited recommendation or an advance payment alone does not establish that a service is fraudulent.

Where do conduct complaints go?

The Bar Association complaint page says code-of-conduct complaints belong to the Disciplinary Board, and that the Bar Association itself cannot deal with that category. It directs complainants to send a written letter to the Board.

Check the published complaint instructions and current fee before submitting. Keep the engagement terms, correspondence, invoices and payment evidence.

How should I check rental and visa offers?

For a rental offer, ask for evidence of ownership or authority to let the property, arrange a viewing and obtain written deposit and tenancy terms. Confirm the identity of the payee and retain the listing, messages and receipts. If a dispute arises, get advice on the contract and applicable route rather than assuming every deposit dispute is criminal fraud.

For a visa service, start with the destination country’s official embassy or visa guidance. Follow the appointment and payment links it identifies, and ask an intermediary to explain exactly what service it provides. Do not rely on promises of guaranteed approval or an unexplained payment to a stranger.

See the Schengen visa guide and UK visa guide for destination-specific official application sources.

What if someone demands money after an alleged collision?

Prioritise safety and describe the facts accurately. Record the location, vehicle details, visible damage and any witnesses where it is safe to do so. Contact your insurer through its established number and ask what evidence and reporting steps it needs. Seek the police or legal assistance appropriate to the incident.

Do not treat an allegation, inconsistent damage or an unknown witness as proof of a staged collision. Keep copies of the communications and ask your insurer for written information about any claim or decision.

Where can I report suspected online fraud?

The Cyprus Police cybercrime service, checked on 3 October 2026, accepts electronic reports:

  • You can submit a named or anonymous report.
  • A named submission requires an authenticated CY Login account.
  • Named requests can be tracked in DIGIPOL → Pending Requests, and the service provides a completion notification.
  • The page lists +357 22 808200 and cybercrime@police.gov.cy for the Cybercrime Unit.

The official immediate-step guidance says to keep evidence intact and avoid altering or deleting files. Do not include passwords or other sensitive data in the report field. If you suspect an infected device, disconnect it from the network. If there is an immediate financial loss involving a bank account, contact your bank as well.

Keep messages, receipts, invoices and other relevant evidence for the report. Ask the police about the appropriate channel for an incident outside the online service’s scope. A report is not a promise that money will be recovered.

When is the Consumer Protection Service relevant?

The government consumer-complaint service allows consumers to complain to the Consumer Protection Service about a possible breach of relevant consumer legislation and provides a link to begin the process.

Explain the transaction, the business involved and what happened; keep the contract, receipt and correspondence. Ask the service whether your issue falls within its remit. Do not assume this reporting route guarantees compensation or resolves every private rental or commercial dispute.

Which authority should I ask about insurance intermediaries?

The Ministry of Finance identifies the Superintendent of Insurance as the competent authority for the insurance sector. The Insurance Companies Control Service acts on the Superintendent’s behalf.

Ask that service how to verify an insurer or intermediary’s authorisation for the proposed activity. Membership of a trade association should not replace that check.

What should I do before paying?

Use these as practical precautions:

  • Confirm identity and payment details through a source you found independently.
  • Ask for clear written scope, fees and conditions.
  • Pause when pressured into immediate payment or secrecy.
  • Preserve the original communications and transaction records.
  • Contact the relevant provider, bank or authority promptly if you suspect a problem.
