Choose a course around your goal: everyday communication, a particular exam, or a certificate required for an application. The links below lead to the course providers and official requirements; check the current intake before paying.
What state Greek language courses exist?
The Ministry of Education’s Adult Education Centres list Greek for non-Greek-speaking adults. Do not assume that every location runs every level.
The published registration and fee page, checked on 3 October 2026, states:
- The standard annual fee is €55 per subject in urban and rural areas; it is €27.50 in communities with fewer than 500 inhabitants.
- Lower fees and exemptions apply to specified groups. Greek for Turkish Cypriots is free; this does not make all Greek courses free for all applicants.
- Registration takes place online in September–October, separately for each subject. Classes run only if the required number of participants is reached.
- Fees are paid online after classes begin, following the programme’s payment instructions.
Use the official page for your intake, location and any discount documents.
What does the University of Cyprus offer?
The School of Modern Greek course page lists levels from A1 to C2 and publishes each programme’s teaching and examination arrangements.
Dated example: Spring Intensive Programme 2027, as published on 3 October 2026. Classes are scheduled for 11 January–9 April 2027, with 156 teaching hours, Monday–Thursday 18:00–21:00. The listed levels have in-person or online options.
| Item | Published terms for this programme |
|---|---|
| Registration | €25 per level, non-refundable |
| Tuition | €500 per level, non-refundable |
| Books | €27–30 |
| Application deadline | 7 October 2026, 10:00 Cyprus time, or earlier if places fill |
| Final exams | 12–16 April 2027, in person, including for online students |
The provider schedules tuition payment for 19–23 October 2026 after the diagnostic examination. Attendance is compulsory: more than six absences removes eligibility for the final exam and certificate. Online attendance requires a computer and an active camera and microphone. A class runs only when the required 15–22 registered, fee-paying students are reached; priority follows completed registration and payment.
These are this programme’s terms, not a general price or timetable for every university course. Recheck the provider page before applying.
What Greek certificate is needed for citizenship?
The Ministry of Interior’s M127 naturalization guidance distinguishes the routes:
- Ordinary naturalization based on residence: Greek at B1. The guidance exempts holders of a recognized secondary-school diploma taught principally in Greek, or a degree from a Greek-taught programme, from the language-certificate proof obligation.
- Qualifying highly skilled employment route: A2 or B1, with different residence requirements. In addition to the separate 12-month continuous-residence requirement, the preceding ten-year period must include at least four years with A2 or three years with B1. The official absence allowances and other eligibility conditions apply; a language certificate alone does not establish eligibility.
For ordinary naturalization, the guidance identifies certificates from the Centre for the Greek Language, through the Ministry of Education Examination Service, or the University of Cyprus School of Modern Greek. Check the certificate required for your own application rather than assuming any course-completion certificate will be accepted.
For residence applications, consult the requirements of your specific permit category before selecting an exam.
Where are exam dates and sample papers published?
The Centre for the Greek Language announcements publish examination and registration dates. Check the round and examination centre; dates are not a universal May or December–January timetable. For example, the announced October 2026 round was restricted to centres in Greece and specified A2 professional and B1 exams.
The Centre’s official sample-paper collection includes A2 and B1 reading, writing, listening and speaking tasks, with audio resources and oral-examination videos. Use the samples for your intended level.
For University of Cyprus courses and their final exams, use the programme schedule. Its in-person examination requirement also matters when choosing an online course.
What is the citizenship political and social knowledge exam?
The M127 guidance requires sufficient knowledge of the basic elements of contemporary political and social reality in Cyprus. The published proof is a certificate showing at least 60% in the Ministry of Education Examination Service’s assessment.
Use the Examination Service for the relevant announcement and registration instructions. Check the announced round rather than treating 16 December as an annual registration rule.
What self-study resources are available?
- Caritas Cyprus: Greek for Newcomers publishes an eight-week Pre-A1 curriculum, with 16 themed lessons and videos including standard Greek and the Cypriot dialect. It is a teaching/self-study resource; the page does not establish that a free classroom intake is currently open.
- Language Transfer: Complete Greek provides audio lessons through its player, app, SoundCloud and YouTube, and a download of the audio files.
- Official exam samples let you practise the format of the intended certification exam.
For a private teacher or school, ask for a written quote, lesson length, group size, cancellation terms and experience with your intended exam. Request a sample lesson before committing to a course.
How should I plan my study?
Treat these as study suggestions, not a promised time to reach A2 or B1:
- Choose your goal and confirm the exact certificate, if one is needed.
- Ask the provider for a placement assessment and a realistic study plan.
- Combine classes with listening, reading, writing and conversation practice.
- Practise the official exam tasks and ask for feedback on speaking and writing.
- Check registration deadlines and examination location before booking travel or paying fees.
