Short answer: Cyprus has 3 main bank options for expats: Bank of Cyprus, Eurobank Limited, and Alpha Bank Cyprus (ex-AstroBank). Monthly fees are usually low, most support English, and non-EU nationals normally need residence documentation to open an account.

The Cypriot banking landscape changed significantly in 2025: two major mergers, tighter compliance requirements, and new rules for non-EU nationals post-Brexit. If you are moving from the UK, here is what works in 2026, with bank-name changes checked on 12 July 2026 and fee/rate examples tied to the cited 2025/April 2026 sources.

For UK expats: Since Brexit, British nationals are classified as non-EU for banking purposes. This means longer account-opening times, stricter documentation requirements, and no automatic right to a Cypriot IBAN. Plan ahead — start the application before you move if possible.

Which are the main Cyprus banks?

BankAssetsStatusNotes for expats
Bank of Cyprus~EUR 27BLargestAccounts for residents only. Conservative compliance — may request extensive documentation
Eurobank Limited~EUR 20B2nd (formerly Hellenic, merged Sept 2025)Accepts non-residents. Most expat-friendly. Main mortgage lender for foreigners
Alpha Bank Cyprus~EUR 6.6B3rd (formerly AstroBank, acquired Nov 2025)Accepts expats
RCB Bank—Closed (2023)No longer operating

Important: AstroBank operations transferred to Alpha Bank Cyprus. Hellenic Bank and Eurobank Cyprus merged into Eurobank Limited. If you had accounts with either legacy bank, check the current bank’s migration instructions before relying on old e-banking credentials.

How do I open a bank account?

Documents Required

  1. Valid passport (or EU ID card, though UK passports are no longer EU documents)
  2. Proof of address (utility bill or tenancy agreement, less than 3 months old — a UK utility bill is accepted during initial setup)
  3. Proof of source of funds (employment contract, company accounts, pension statement, investment portfolio)
  4. Tax Identification Number (TIN) or tax residency certificate — your UK UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) or a Cyprus TIN if you already have one
  5. ARC (Alien Registration Certificate) — required for non-EU nationals, which now includes UK citizens
  6. Criminal record check (some banks request this)

Post-Brexit note: UK nationals are treated as third-country nationals for immigration and banking checks. Apply for residence documentation through the Migration Department as soon as your Cyprus route is clear; without it, most banks will not proceed.

Timelines

ScenarioTypical duration
EU citizen, personal account3-5 working days
Non-EU (inc. UK post-Brexit), personal account5-15 working days
Corporate (simple structure)4-8 weeks
Corporate (complex structure, multiple directors)1-3 months

Common Reasons for Rejection

  • Incomplete or outdated documents (especially proof of address older than 3 months)
  • Unclear explanation of source of funds — “savings” is not enough; banks want to see statements
  • Connection to a high-risk jurisdiction (Russia, Belarus, Iran — this does not apply to UK nationals)
  • Business in a high-risk industry (crypto, forex, gambling, offshore structures)
  • Applying to multiple banks simultaneously (banks share this information)

What are the fees?

Personal Accounts

Bank of CyprusEUR 6/quarter (EUR 24/year)IncludedFree up to EUR 1,0000.10-0.20% + EUR 10-15 + EUR 10-60 correspondent

Alpha BankTBC (post-merger)TBCTBCTBC

Cheapest option: Bank of Cyprus without an overdraft, or Eurobank basic plan = EUR 24/year. For context, that is roughly what a UK current account costs in hidden FX fees on a single holiday.

Corporate Accounts

Maintenance: EUR 50-150/quarter. International transfers: EUR 15-30 per transaction plus correspondent bank fees. Cards: EUR 30-50/year.

How do I transfer money from the UK?

This is where most British expats lose money unnecessarily. The default option — asking your UK bank to send a GBP-to-EUR wire — typically costs 2-4% when you factor in FX markup plus fees. Over a year of monthly transfers, that adds up.

Best Options

MethodCostSpeedNotes
Wise0.4-0.6%1-2 working daysMid-market rate. Best for regular transfers. GBP debit = instant funding
RevolutFree (within limits), then 0.5%Instant (SEPA)Interbank rate Mon-Fri during market hours. Weekend markup 1%
CurrencyFair / OFX0.3-0.5%1-3 working daysGood for large sums (property purchase, pension lump sum)
UK bank international payment2-4% all-in2-5 working daysAvoid unless no alternative. Poor FX rate + fees + correspondent fees
Standing order to EUR accountVariesOngoingSome UK banks offer EUR accounts. Transfer to yourself in EUR, then SEPA to Cyprus. Removes FX markup from the wire itself

The Efficient Setup

  1. Keep a UK bank account — you need it for UK State Pension, any UK rental income, HMRC refunds, and the odd UK Direct Debit
  2. Use Wise or Revolut as a bridge — convert GBP to EUR at the real exchange rate, then SEPA to your Cypriot bank
  3. Set up a recurring transfer — Wise auto-convert moves money on a schedule. Set it and forget it
  4. For large sums (property purchases, pension lump sums) — compare CurrencyFair, OFX, and Wise on the day. The rate difference on EUR 200,000 at 0.3% vs 1.5% is EUR 2,400

Faster Payments note: UK Faster Payments (FPS) gets money to Wise/Revolut instantly. From there, SEPA to Cyprus takes minutes to hours. The total journey is typically same-day, compared to 3-5 days via a traditional bank wire.

Can I use Wise and Revolut in Cyprus?

If you are coming from the UK, you almost certainly already have one or both. Here is how they work on the ground in Cyprus.

Practical advice: open a local Cypriot bank account for utilities, local Direct Debits, and anything that requires a CY IBAN. Use Wise/Revolut for everything else — international transfers, daily card payments, online shopping. The combination is better than either alone.

What Requires a Cypriot IBAN

  • EAC (electricity) standing order
  • Water Board standing order
  • Some landlords insist on local bank transfer
  • Municipal tax payments
  • Social Insurance contributions (if employed)
  • GESY (healthcare) contributions (paid through employer, but the employer needs your CY IBAN)

How do I transfer my pension to Cyprus?

For retirees, pensions are typically the main income stream. Here is how the main types work.

UK State Pension

  • Paid directly into any bank account worldwide, including a Cypriot one
  • Paid in GBP — you bear the FX risk
  • Fully uprated annually in Cyprus (unlike countries such as Australia or Canada where it is frozen)
  • To set up: contact the International Pension Centre or manage online via your Government Gateway
  • Tip: have it paid into your Wise GBP account, then convert and transfer to Cyprus yourself. This avoids the poor FX rate that banks apply to incoming GBP payments

Private/Workplace Pensions

  • Under the UK-Cyprus Double Tax Agreement, pensions are taxed only in Cyprus (not the UK) once you are Cypriot tax resident
  • Defined Benefit (DB) pensions: leave in the UK scheme, draw as income. Do not transfer a DB pension unless an FCA-regulated adviser specifically recommends it
  • Defined Contribution (DC) / SIPP: can be transferred to a QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) in Cyprus or an EU jurisdiction — but QROPS options are limited post-Brexit. Most expats keep the SIPP in the UK and draw from it
  • The 25% tax-free lump sum under UK rules is still available if you draw from a UK pension. If you transfer to a QROPS, you lose this
  • Consult a cross-border IFA (Independent Financial Adviser) regulated by both the FCA and CySEC before making any transfers. The wrong move can cost tens of thousands in unnecessary tax

Pension Tax in Cyprus

You can choose annually between:

  • Flat 5% on pension income above EUR 3,420/year (the first EUR 3,420 is tax-free)
  • Standard progressive rates (0% up to EUR 22,000 in 2026, then 20/25/30/35%)

For most UK pension incomes, the flat 5% rate is more favourable. At a pension of GBP 20,000/year (~EUR 23,200), you would pay roughly EUR 988 in tax under the flat rate — compared to approximately GBP 1,500 in the UK.

What mortgage options do British expats have?

Buying property in Cyprus as a UK national is straightforward, but financing has specific constraints.

What Eurobank Needs for a Mortgage Application

  • Valid passport and ARC
  • Proof of income (3 years of tax returns, P60s, or company accounts)
  • Proof of deposit (typically 30-40% of purchase price)
  • Property valuation (arranged by the bank)
  • Life insurance assignment (required by most Cypriot lenders)
  • Clean credit history — Cyprus banks may check UK credit references

UK mortgage comparison: Cypriot rates (2.95-4%) are broadly comparable to UK rates in 2026. The key difference is LTV — UK first-time buyers can access 90-95% LTV, while in Cyprus you need 30-40% deposit as a foreigner. Plan your deposit accordingly.

How is cryptocurrency regulated in Cyprus?

Tax (from 1 January 2026)

Flat rate of 8% on gains from crypto assets (new Article 20E). Source: Chambers & Co

ParameterRule
Rate8% on gains
LossesOffset within the same tax year only
Loss carry-forwardNot allowed
Taxable eventsSale, exchange, payment for goods/services

UK comparison: In the UK, crypto gains are taxed as Capital Gains Tax at 10-20% (above the GBP 3,000 annual allowance in 2025/26). Cyprus’s flat 8% with no minimum threshold is simpler and, for larger gains, significantly cheaper. If you are a UK crypto holder relocating to Cyprus, the timing of disposal matters — gains realised after becoming Cypriot tax resident fall under the 8% rate.

Regulation

  • CySEC regulates crypto service providers (CASP licence required)
  • Several licensed exchanges operate from Cyprus
  • Cyprus is one of the most crypto-friendly jurisdictions in the EU

How does non-dom status affect banking?

The non-domiciled (non-dom) tax status is available to new residents for up to 17 years (with possible extension):

TaxNon-dom rateStandard rate
SDC on dividends0%5%
SDC on deposit interest0%17%
SDC on rental income0%Abolished from 2026
GHS (GESY)2.65%2.65%

If you lose non-dom status: SDC on dividends drops to 5% (2026 tax reform). Source: Philippou Law

What this means for your bank account: Non-dom + Cypriot bank deposit = 0% tax on interest income. With EUR deposit rates at 3-4% in 2026, a EUR 100,000 deposit earns EUR 3,000-4,000/year in interest — completely free of SDC. In the UK, the same interest would be taxed at your marginal rate (20-45%) above the GBP 1,000 Personal Savings Allowance. Over 17 years, the difference is substantial.

What should British expats know about EU sanctions?

While the Russia-related sanctions sections are less relevant for UK nationals, you should be aware of the broader picture:

  • Cypriot banks have significantly tightened compliance since 2022. Even routine account openings now involve more documentation than before
  • If you have business interests involving Russia, Belarus, or Iran, expect additional scrutiny
  • MIR and SBP (Russian payment systems) are banned in the EU since January 2026 under the 19th sanctions package
  • 45 Russian banks are under full transaction bans (18th package, July 2025)
  • None of this affects standard GBP-EUR transfers from UK banks

What should I do step by step?

Step 1: Open a Local Account

Eurobank is the best starting point for British expats (accepts non-residents, most flexible with non-EU nationals). Bank of Cyprus if you are already a permanent resident. Bring: passport, ARC, tenancy agreement, employment contract or pension statement, proof of funds.

Step 2: Set Up Wise and Revolut

If you do not have them already, open both before you leave the UK (easier to verify a UK address). Use Wise for regular GBP-to-EUR transfers. Use Revolut for daily card spending. Both supplement your Cypriot bank account.

Step 3: Route Your Pension

State Pension: redirect to your Wise GBP account, then convert and send to Cyprus yourself. Private pension: keep drawing from the UK scheme. Consult a cross-border IFA before making any structural changes.

Step 4: Claim Non-Dom Status

If you have moved to Cyprus recently, apply for non-dom status. 0% on dividends and deposit interest for up to 17 years. This is free money — the only cost is the paperwork.

Step 5: Plan for a Mortgage (if Buying)

Start your Eurobank mortgage enquiry early. Gather 3 years of UK tax returns, confirm your deposit, and get pre-approval before you start viewing properties. The process takes 4-8 weeks once you submit a full application.
