Short answer: Use the checklist for the actual visitor category and application stage. Income evidence, residence permission and permission to work are separate questions. The autonomous visitor checklist distinguishes first applications and renewals; family visitors linked to a worker use different category instructions.

Primary sources were checked on 3 October 2026.

What Does a Visitor Permit Allow?

The Migration Department’s visitor policy describes Regulation 14 permits for third-country nationals taking short or long holidays, touring, or investigating residence in Cyprus. It states that holders cannot carry out economic activity in Cyprus.

The listed categories include autonomous visitors, dependent spouses/minor children of visitors and certain other categories. The page directs family members of Cypriot/EU citizens or workers on other permits to their separate family instructions. Do not apply this autonomous visitor checklist to every worker’s spouse.

The checklist accepts specified salary and passive-income evidence, but this is not blanket authorisation to perform remote work from Cyprus. Have the actual duties, employer or clients and appropriate residence/work permission checked before working or trading.

What Are the Autonomous Visitor Financial Requirements?

The complete autonomous visitor checklist requires sufficient stable resources from satisfactory income outside Cyprus. Examples include salary, pension, deposits in a foreign account, rent, dividends and deposit interest. It lists limited Cyprus-income exceptions: company dividends with an accountant’s certification of no salary from the position, Cyprus rents, and income in a Cyprus account from previous employment in a company of foreign interests.

Statements and family amounts

  • Detailed transaction statements from a financial institution in Cyprus show foreign remittances in the applicant’s name.
  • The stated total is at least EUR 2,000 monthly or EUR 24,000 annually for one person.
  • Increase the amount by 20% for a spouse and 15% for each child.
  • Transfers abroad or to third parties are excluded from the calculation.
  • For the first permit, statements run from account opening; for renewal, they cover the last twelve months.
  • Attach the declaration of supported family members and summarized income statement.

First permit versus renewal balance

At the first permit, a transfer or cash deposit of at least EUR 10,000 is also accepted. A cash deposit requires the customs cash declaration. This provision should be read with the sufficient/stable-income requirements; it is not a guarantee of approval from a deposit alone.

At renewal submission, the account balance must in any case be at least EUR 6,000, regardless of family size. The checklist does not state an automatic spouse/child percentage increase for that renewal balance. Have any first-deposit assessment for your family confirmed rather than inventing an additional threshold.

What Documents Are Required?

Use the official visitor forms and supporting lists for the exact category. The autonomous list includes:

  • A valid passport/travel-document copy with at least three months’ validity from application submission, and a copy showing the last arrival and applicable visa.
  • Original clear criminal-record certificate from the country of origin or different residence country, officially translated/certified as specified, first permit only.
  • Original medical certificate for hepatitis B/C, HIV and syphilis blood tests and a tuberculosis chest X-ray with a doctor’s opinion, stamped by a specialist doctor in Cyprus, first permit only.
  • The applicable bank guarantee, financial statements and income evidence.
  • Plan A medical-insurance evidence covering inpatient/outpatient care and transportation of remains.
  • Accommodation evidence: title deed/purchase document deposited in the Land Registry, a duly certified rental document with stamping where applicable, or a suitable-accommodation host declaration where applicable.
  • The original authenticated/certified marriage certificate with Greek/English translation where applicable; the original plus copy is presented at the first permit, and the copy at renewal.

For owned/rented accommodation documents, the first permit requires the original plus copy; renewal uses the copy. Do not replace the checklist’s first-permit-only medical/criminal wording with a universal annual repeat-test rule. Confirm any additional request for your actual file.

Certification and stamp duty

Stamp duty was abolished from 1 January 2026. Documents prepared and signed by at least one party by 31 December 2025 remain under the previous rules. The repeal does not replace a separate requirement for a duly certified accommodation document.

Issuing country and document category matter. Certain covered EU public documents are exempt from apostille; this is not a universal exception for every document. Use current certification and translation instructions for the actual document.

What Is the Bank Guarantee?

The autonomous visitor checklist specifies an original guarantee from a banking institution in Cyprus, in the applicant’s name from their own account, lasting ten years to cover possible repatriation. The amount depends on country of origin; a copy is submitted at renewal. Confirm the applicable category and amount with the Department and issuing bank rather than using an unverified exemption list or treating the guarantee as lasting only as long as the permit.

The Department’s bank-guarantee overview says electronic-money institutions operating in Cyprus cannot issue bank guarantees. That is separate from the financial-institution transaction-statement requirement.

Return conditions

The return procedure requires at least one specified reason, including another qualifying lawful status, non-arrival, departure where Cyprus incurred no removal costs, or the specified replacement guarantee/declaration arrangements.

Submit the relevant written request on the specified completed/signed form, identifying the file/ARC and guarantee number. If a return reason exists, the Department sends a letter to the interested party and the issuing bank. The published average is three months after the request is sent, conditional on a qualifying reason; it is not a guaranteed bank-release date. If a guarantee is used for deportation, any remaining balance is returned by wire transfer.

Application, Fees, Timing and Renewal

The visitor procedure requires an MVIS8 application, the relevant supporting documents and fees. Initial application is submitted before the visa expires at the appropriate application point. Check the official submission points and appointment instructions for your district.

Biometric photo/fingerprints and signature are collected using the receipt and valid travel document, including at renewal. For children under six, only the photo is captured. First registration in the Aliens’ Register is carried out where no previous registration exists.

Published fees are EUR 70 for issuance or renewal, plus EUR 70 for first Aliens’ Registry registration where applicable. The published examination estimate is usually before four months, provided supporting information/documents are sufficient.

The ordinary first visitor permit is one year, subject to passport validity: if necessary it ends three months before the passport expires. Religious and marriage-to-Cypriot visitor categories have different stated durations. Renewal requires continued eligibility.

The Greek visitor procedure and Department’s general FAQ require renewal at least one month before the current permit expires. Arrange the applicable submission and appointment in time; do not assume an obsolete online channel or another category’s renewal window applies.

Dependent Visitors Linked to CFI Workers

The CFI dependent visitor policy allows spouse/dependent-child visitor permits where family-reunification conditions are temporarily unmet, for example passport validity or marriage duration. It also lists specified parents/in-laws, partners and adult-child cases with their own conditions and sponsor-resource requirements.

Its stated permit duration is up to the sponsor’s permit validity, subject to immigration conditions and passport validity. Do not confuse this with the qualifying CFI family-reunification spouse employment category: the family-reunification policy permits paid employment under single-permit conditions while excluding self-employment in that CFI spouse category. Have divorce or sponsor-status changes assessed under the actual route rather than assuming every dependent permit follows one automatic rule.

Healthcare and Contributions

The autonomous checklist requires Plan A insurance. Visitor status alone does not establish GeSY entitlement: check HIO’s beneficiary categories, including nationality, ordinary residence and legal status. GHS contribution liability is a separate income/category question; paying a contribution does not establish healthcare eligibility.

Absence, Re-Entry and Naturalisation

The Department’s general FAQ says re-entry with a valid temporary residence permit and passport requires not having stayed abroad for more than three months. It separately describes travel while a permit is pending using the payment receipt bearing a re-entry stamp, presented with the passport. Confirm your actual permit and travel documents before booking. This does not establish automatic cancellation after ninety days or every destination’s visa requirements.

For ordinary naturalisation, the standard residence requirement is seven qualifying years in the ten years preceding a separate final twelve-month period. In that final period, absences totaling up to ninety days do not interrupt the continuity requirement. Other legal criteria include Greek language or the specified education exemption, political/social knowledge, character, resources/accommodation and intention.

Section 111Β defines qualifying residence by actual physical presence under the applicable immigration formalities and excludes specified protection/student periods. A visitor permit’s label alone does not decide the calculation. The highly skilled route has separate qualifying employment and language conditions; use the ordinary and highly skilled guides rather than a visitor-plus-BCS formula.

Practical Checks

  1. Identify the autonomous or family visitor category and the right document stage.
  2. Document the actual eligible income and transfers, with family and outgoing-transfer conditions.
  3. Check the ten-year guarantee, insurance and accommodation evidence.
  4. Plan renewal against the official deadline and actual passport/card expiry.
  5. Confirm work and re-entry permission separately from financial evidence.
  6. Keep dated residence and travel records for any future application.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much income do I need for a Cyprus visitor permit?

The autonomous visitor checklist specifies EUR 2,000 monthly or EUR 24,000 annually for one person, increased by 20% for a spouse and 15% for each child, with remittance and income-source conditions. At the first permit, a transfer or cash deposit of at least EUR 10,000 is also accepted; cash requires the customs declaration. At renewal submission, the account balance must be at least EUR 6,000 regardless of family size.

Can I work remotely on a Cyprus visitor permit?

The published visitor policy excludes economic activity in Cyprus. A salary or other qualifying income from abroad can be evidence for the financial requirement, but acceptance of income evidence does not establish permission to perform every remote job or business activity while in Cyprus. Confirm the activity and appropriate residence/work route before relying on it.

Does visitor permit time count toward Cyprus citizenship?

Visitor status alone does not settle qualifying residence. Ordinary naturalisation has separate legal and physical residence, absence, language, knowledge, character, resources and intention requirements. The law excludes specified protection and student periods from the calculation; the highly skilled route has distinct employment and language conditions. Have your actual history assessed rather than relying on a visitor-plus-work formula.
