Short answer: A national Cyprus residence permit alone does not exempt visa-required nationals. Apply to the consulate of the main destination, assessed by length or purpose of stay; if there is no main destination, apply to the first-entry country. Normal processing is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45; the standard adult fee is EUR 90.

Cyprus is outside the Schengen Area. Visa requirements depend on nationality and residence-document type. British citizens can generally visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for permitted short visits; work and longer stays have separate requirements. As checked on 3 October 2026, the live official ETIAS website says it is not operating and is not collecting applications; the exact launch date will be announced in advance.

Applying from Cyprus

As a general rule, apply at the consulate with territorial responsibility for your country of legal residence. Confirm its accepted proof of Cyprus residence before booking; an application receipt is not a universal substitute for a valid permit.

Apply no earlier than six months before travel and, as a rule, at least 15 calendar days before departure. Seafarers performing their duties can apply up to nine months ahead; justified urgent cases can be accepted later than 15 days. Appointment availability is separate from the decision timeframe.

Normal processing is 15 calendar days after lodging an admissible application, with an extension up to 45 days where further examination is needed. Do not assume approval, multiple entries or passport return by a particular travel date.

Local appointment procedures

  • Greece: use the embassy’s official booking link. Its published instructions require a separate timeslot for each applicant, including other family members. Confirm residence-document requirements directly if your permit is pending.
  • Italy: appointments are booked through Prenot@Mi. The Nicosia embassy says passports, travel documents and residence permits must remain valid at least three months beyond the last day of the Schengen trip. Check its current category-specific checklist.
  • France: complete the France-Visas application, then use the official Cyprus appointment-request channel. If admissible, the visa section contacts you by email with an appointment date; reply to confirm. Its Cyprus page requires legal residence and a valid residence permit, subject to the separately listed special cases.
  • Spain: its Nicosia page provides the applicable checklist and application-status link. Follow the consulate’s instructions for passport return.
  • Other destinations: use the European Commission’s country links to identify the competent consulate and its current booking procedure.

Fees and documents

The standard visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to under 12. Children under 6 are exempt. Visa-facilitation agreements and other exemptions can change the fee; the Commission lists EUR 35 for applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus. A service-centre fee may be additional.

For an ordinary short-stay application, prepare:

  • A valid passport, application form and compliant photograph. The passport must generally remain valid at least three months after intended departure, have been issued within the previous ten years and contain at least two blank pages.
  • Evidence of the purpose of the journey, financial means, accommodation and intention to leave before the visa expires.
  • Travel medical insurance covering medical repatriation, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment and death. For the ordinary route, it must cover all Schengen member-state territory and the entire intended stay or transit, with at least EUR 30,000 cover. For multiple-entry applications, prove insurance for the first intended visit and acknowledge the need for cover on subsequent visits; statutory exemptions exist.
  • Any additional evidence required by the consulate for your visa category and circumstances.

There is no universal EUR 50–70 daily budget or three-month bank-statement rule in this guide. Use the destination’s financial and supporting-document requirements.

EU citizen family members

For qualifying family members accompanying or joining an EU citizen in an EU country other than that citizen’s nationality, a required visa is free and processed under an accelerated procedure. The reduced supporting-document list is:

  • The applicant’s valid passport and the EU citizen’s valid passport or identity card.
  • Proof of family ties and, where relevant, dependency.
  • Proof of accompanying or joining the EU citizen.

The ordinary tourism checklist does not apply to this qualifying route. State clearly that you are applying as an EU citizen’s family member.

A valid passport with a qualifying EU-family residence card issued under free-movement rules allows visa-free travel to EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, including travel alone. This differs from a national permit issued to the spouse of a Cypriot citizen in Cyprus. Cyprus-issued family cards do not provide this exemption for Switzerland; nationality exemptions may still apply.

Multiple-entry visas and Russian applicants

The Commission’s 6 November 2025 decision C(2025)7552 sets adapted multiple-entry rules for Russian nationals residing in Russia and applying at consulates in Russia. It is a binding decision, rather than a recommendation; it contains specified family/transport-worker categories and justified individual exceptions. It does not itself cover Cyprus-resident applications lodged in Cyprus. General Visa Code eligibility and individual assessment still apply, so multiple entries are not guaranteed.

Poland and airport connections

Polish Border Guard guidance limits entry by Russian citizens to the categories in section 3(2) of the relevant border-traffic regulation. Exceptions exist; a Schengen visa alone does not establish that you qualify. Ask the Polish authorities about your circumstances before booking a route requiring entry into Poland.

Distinguish entering Schengen from remaining in an airport’s international transit area. Some nationalities require an airport-transit visa for some or all Schengen airports, with exemptions. The Commission provides the common and country-specific lists; check your nationality, documents and actual connection.

School trips

EU rules provide some visa exceptions for pupils on school excursions. Eligibility depends on the applicable rule and documentation, so ask the destination authorities and school to confirm the exemption before relying on it. An anonymous travel story does not establish a general rule.

Refusal and a new application

A refusal must give the reason and explain appeal arrangements. A previous refusal does not automatically require refusal of a new application; the new application is assessed on all available information. Apply again to the consulate competent for the actual trip rather than choosing another consulate solely to bypass a refusal.
