Short answer: Foreign nationals with a valid Cyprus residence or work permit can apply through the Embassy of Japan in Cyprus. Email cy-ryouji@cy.mofa.go.jp before booking. The standard processing period is five working days from document submission; examination can take longer.

Check whether your nationality needs a visa first. The Ministry’s short-stay exemption list includes Cyprus, the other EU countries and the United Kingdom, with an initial stay normally up to 90 days. Visa exemption does not permit income-earning activities; longer stays or work require the applicable status and procedures.

Eligibility and timing

The embassy accepts Cypriot nationals and foreign nationals with a valid Cyprus residence or work permit. It excludes individuals living in the north who have no identification of the Republic of Cyprus. If your permit expires before your return flight to Cyprus, renew it before scheduling the appointment and submit the original renewal receipt with the application documents.

The standard processing period is five working days from document submission, and examination may take longer. Appointment availability is separate: the embassy strongly recommends arranging an appointment three months before travel. It cannot speed up processing to meet your preferred departure or collection date.

Cyprus is not on the Ministry’s published list of countries of residence eligible for JAPAN eVISA as checked on 3 October 2026. Use the embassy’s Cyprus procedure if you require a visa and reside here.

Request an appointment

Email cy-ryouji@cy.mofa.go.jp first. The consular department supplies the current required documents, procedures and booking link. Bookings made without prior communication are deleted. Its published inquiry fields are:

  • Full name and nationality.
  • Valid Cyprus residence/work permit and card expiry date.
  • Travel purpose and scheduled travel dates.
  • Intended length of stay in Japan and contact number.

Provide those details for each additional applicant. A simple inquiry template is:

Dear Consular Section,

I would like to apply for a short-stay visa for Japan.
Full name: [NAME]
Nationality: [NATIONALITY]
Cyprus residence/work permit and expiry: [DETAILS]
Travel purpose: [PURPOSE]
Scheduled travel dates: [DATES]
Intended length of stay: [DAYS]
Contact number: [NUMBER]

Please send the current checklist and appointment instructions.
[Repeat the details for each additional applicant.]

Kind regards,
[NAME]

Prepare and submit the application

Use the embassy’s supplied checklist instead of assuming a universal bank-statement period, employment requirement or passport-validity interval. Its public instructions say:

  • Book one application timeslot per applicant, including children; for collecting several applicants’ passports, book one collection timeslot for all.
  • Applicants older than six must provide original signatures on the documents.
  • Complete all application-form fields; write “N/A” where a field does not apply.
  • Supply the required documents for each applicant. The embassy does not make prints.
  • The embassy keeps the passport during processing and may request additional documents or the applicant’s presence.

Follow the consular section’s instructions for submission and collection. A complete application does not guarantee a visa: the embassy says an application may be rejected after examination.

Fees and refusal

Japan revised its general visa fees for applications accepted from 1 July 2026. The applicable fee can differ or be waived depending on nationality and purpose, and payment is generally in the issuing mission’s local currency. Confirm the amount and payment instructions with the Cyprus embassy; this guide does not quote a universal euro fee. If a visa is not issued, no visa issuance fee is charged.

After refusal, a new application for the same purpose is generally not accepted within six months. The Ministry sometimes accepts an earlier reapplication where circumstances have changed significantly and travel is necessary for humanitarian reasons. Consult the embassy before relying on that exception.
