Short answer: Compare offers using annual gross cash pay, then assess your own deductions and benefits. Include a 13th salary only where it applies. Keep employer costs, paid leave and discretionary bonuses separate so the same value is not counted twice.
How do I find a useful salary benchmark?
Collect dated job advertisements, recruiter quotations and comparable written offers for the same occupation, seniority, duties, city and working arrangement. Record the number of observations and their date. Treat self-reported salary websites as additional leads, and check their sample, currency and compensation definitions before comparing them.
Ask whether a quoted figure is monthly or annual, gross or net, and whether it includes a 13th or 14th payment, bonus or benefits. Do not assume that a title such as “senior” has the same scope at every company.
A company’s immigration or recruitment category is not evidence that it pays a fixed premium. Nor does an employer’s label establish your eligibility for an income-tax exemption. Check your own circumstances against the current Income Tax Law’s employment exemptions and the tax guide.
Is 13th salary guaranteed?
The Department of Labour Relations’ official answer, checked on 3 October 2026, says there is no general legal provision requiring private employers to pay a 13th or 14th salary.
It must nevertheless be paid where provided by:
- A collective agreement in force.
- A personal contract or employment agreement.
- Existing company practice.
The Department says an established payment practice can create the obligation even without a written agreement, and that employers must inform employees in writing about the benefit if provided. Ask which terms apply to your offer, including the amount, payment date and treatment if employment starts or ends during the year. Do not assume every extra payment equals one full monthly salary.
How do I calculate total compensation?
Use separate lines for:
| Component | How to compare it |
|---|---|
| Annual gross base cash | Monthly gross base × the applicable number of base payments |
| Contractual extra cash | Add actual guaranteed extra payments not already included in the base figure |
| Variable bonus | State the conditions; keep a target separate from guaranteed cash |
| Benefits | Identify the benefit and your own value for it; do not present it as salary |
| Employer contributions | Keep employer costs separate from your own gross pay and take-home pay |
| Your deductions | Estimate personal income tax and applicable contributions for your circumstances |
Illustration: EUR 3,500 monthly gross paid twelve times is EUR 42,000 annual gross base. If the contract additionally guarantees one full EUR 3,500 payment, annual gross cash becomes EUR 45,500. Its twelve-month equivalent is EUR 3,791.67, rounded to cents. This is an assumed offer, not a national salary benchmark or a net-pay estimate.
Paid leave during an already-paid employment year should not be added again as another month of cash salary. The official paid-leave service states that an employee who has worked 48 weeks within a year is entitled to four weeks of paid annual leave: 20 working days for a five-day week, or 24 for a six-day week. It describes payment by the employer or the Central Holiday Fund. Check your particular accrual and contractual terms; a more favourable offer may provide additional leave.
For a net estimate, use the applicable tax year, taxable income, personal exemptions and contribution bases. An employer’s payroll estimate can help compare the proposed offer; do not assume that the same gross figure gives every employee the same net amount.
How should I discuss salary?
Ask about the budget and complete package while establishing whether the role fits. You can say:
“What annual gross range is budgeted for the role, and which bonuses or additional salary payments are included?”
If asked about expectations, distinguish your desired package from your current compensation. You do not need to inflate current pay by adding employer costs or assigning an invented value to benefits.
“For this scope, I am seeking annual gross base pay of EUR X–Y. I would also like to understand the bonus, leave and remote-working terms.”
These are example scripts. Choose a range whose lower end is acceptable and explain which assumptions it includes. You can state a clear single request when that better expresses your position.
When should I negotiate?
Discuss the budget early enough to avoid a mismatch, then review concrete terms before accepting a written offer. For an existing role, prepare around the agreed review process, expanded responsibilities or documented outcomes.
Build a short case using your actual results. Explain the scope, evidence and proposed adjustment; do not invent achievements or assume a negotiation tactic guarantees leverage.
- Gather comparable offers and define the role’s responsibilities.
- Calculate the annual package without double-counting.
- Decide your preferred outcome, acceptable minimum and alternatives.
- Present a supported request and allow time for a response.
- Discuss feasible alternatives and document any agreement.
A higher opening request can leave room for discussion, but there is no verified universal percentage that produces a successful negotiation. Keep your own limits private and avoid promising concessions before understanding the response.
How can I respond to objections?
| Employer’s response | Possible reply |
|---|---|
| “The budget does not allow it.” | “Which parts of the package can change, and what approval would a pay adjustment require?” |
| “Let us revisit it in six months.” | “Can we record the review date and measurable criteria in writing?” |
| “Everyone at this level receives the same.” | “Could we review whether my responsibilities fit that level?” |
| “You have just started.” | “What outcomes would you want to see before reviewing compensation?” |
These are suggestions, not claims about how every Cyprus employer behaves. A review promise is not a guaranteed increase; clarify the actual commitment.
How should I compare contracting with employment?
Calculate a contractor rate from the actual arrangement rather than multiplying an employment salary by a universal factor. Estimate billable days, unpaid time, tax and applicable contributions, insurance, equipment, administration, payment risk and your required income. A company and an individual self-employed contractor may have different obligations.
Check your residence and work permission and self-employed registration conditions before assuming you can use the proposed structure.
Negotiate the fee, invoicing and payment deadlines, deliverables, expenses, termination, liability, exclusivity and ownership of pre-existing tools. Ask a lawyer to assess the actual contract, including restrictive clauses and the substance of the working relationship. Contractual time off for a contractor should not be presented as the statutory paid-leave entitlement of an employee.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average salary in Cyprus for expats?
Compare current offers for the same occupation, seniority, location and contract type. An economy-wide average or an undated job-title range does not establish an expat’s market salary. Record whether each figure is gross or net and whether it includes extra salary payments or bonuses.
Should I include the 13th salary when stating my current compensation?
Include it if you are actually entitled to it, and identify it separately. Cyprus’s Labour Relations Department says private employers have no universal legal duty to provide 13th or 14th salary, but payment is mandatory where required by a collective agreement, personal contract or existing company practice.
When is the best time to negotiate salary in Cyprus?
Clarify the budget and your expectations early enough to assess the role. A written offer gives concrete terms to negotiate before acceptance. For an existing job, prepare a discussion around a review date, expanded responsibilities or documented results; there is no universally best moment.
How much above my target should I ask for?
Choose an opening request supported by comparable offers, the role and your results. Set your own acceptable minimum privately. A fixed percentage above a target does not guarantee agreement; use a range only if its lower end would be acceptable to you.
Can I negotiate things other than base salary?
You can propose additional leave, remote-working arrangements, training, a sign-on bonus, equipment or relocation support. Check feasibility and conditions with the employer, and record agreed terms in writing rather than assuming a proposal is an entitlement.
