Short answer: Choose a bank-specific application route and confirm its documents before applying. A payment account, bank approval and an immigration bank guarantee are separate matters. The autonomous visitor checklist requires a ten-year guarantee from a banking institution in Cyprus.
The sources below were checked on 3 October 2026. Requirements differ between products and application routes; use the bank’s current instructions rather than a universal “expat document package”.
Which bank and application route should I compare?
Bank of Cyprus
The mobile onboarding page describes scanning an original ID card or passport, taking a live selfie, accepting the terms and entering financial details. Check the linked registration instructions and eligibility for your circumstances before relying on this route.
The same page offers a separate application route for an individual permanent resident of Cyprus with no existing relationship with the bank who lacks an original passport or identity card. For that alternative route, documents are uploaded electronically, but physical attendance and the original uploaded documentation are required to activate the account and debit card. The bank evaluates applications under its policies and may reject them. Do not present this form as an unrestricted online application for every foreign resident.
For international applicants, the International Banking Unit account-opening page says an individual may approach the bank personally or through a local professional intermediary. It requests a completed account-opening questionnaire, customer enrolment form and specified documentation. Ask the bank which unit and route apply to you; submitting forms does not guarantee approval.
Eurobank Ltd
The current accounts page lists several account types and asks applicants to prepare a passport or ID, a payslip and proof of residential address. Its stated process is to complete the online form, after which the bank assesses the application and contacts the applicant. Its advertised short form-completion time is not an account-approval promise.
For the Basic Account, the bank directs applicants to book a meeting or visit a branch. The required information covers identity, income, contact details and professional activity; it may also request the purpose of the relationship and economic or transaction-profile information. Existing customers must provide updated information. Compare the specific product, rather than assuming every account uses the same online process.
Alpha Bank and former AstroBank customers
Alpha Bank’s ex-AstroBank page says the transition of former AstroBank customers to its systems and services is in progress and links current migration FAQs. Existing customers should follow those instructions. For a new account, ask Alpha Bank for its current product and onboarding requirements; the transition page is not a promise of acceptance.
What documents should I prepare?
Start with the chosen bank’s checklist. The verified Eurobank pages request identification, address and income information, and further details about professional activity and the intended relationship. Bank of Cyprus’s alternative form separately requests documents where applicable and links its required-document list. These are provider and route requirements, not a list imposed identically by every bank.
Before collecting or paying to certify documents, ask:
- Which original passport or identity document is accepted for this route?
- Which residential-address evidence is accepted, and how recent must it be?
- Which income and source-of-funds records are needed for my employment, pension, business or other income?
- Which tax-residence, TIN, ARC or residence documents does the bank need in my case?
- Which translation or certification rules apply to each document?
- Is physical attendance required, and at which stage?
Keep the bank’s request and your submitted copies. Ask for clarification when a document does not match your circumstances instead of sending an indiscriminate bundle of personal records.
Can I apply without local employment or property?
Bank of Cyprus publishes an international account-opening route. That does not establish that local employment or property ownership is universally required, or that a residence permit guarantees acceptance. Explain your actual residence, income and intended account use, and obtain the bank’s instructions for your case.
For an immigration application, check the permit’s evidence requirements separately. A bank’s willingness to accept an account application does not establish that every account statement or product meets the residence checklist.
How should I compare fees and payment services?
Request the current fee information for the exact account and customer category. Compare maintenance, cards, transfers, currency conversion, cash withdrawals and any guarantee charges. Ask which services are included and which are charged separately.
For example, Eurobank’s Basic Account page quotes EUR 2 per month for opening and maintenance and the simple debit card. Specified additional services are charged up to EUR 12 per calendar year, with a pro-rata limit for an account opened during the year. Its listed extras, including currency conversion, incoming or outgoing payments above EUR 5,000, urgent processing, outgoing “OUR” charges, premium cards and foreign-currency ATM withdrawals, are outside that cap. Do not describe EUR 36 as a limit on every possible service charge. The bank also publishes specified vulnerable-customer exemptions; check whether you qualify.
If comparing Revolut, Wise or another payment provider, check the legal entity serving you, the account’s terms and whether it can provide the exact immigration document you need. A payment app or an IBAN alone is not evidence that the visitor guarantee requirement is met.
For a transfer, obtain a quote showing the recipient’s expected amount, exchange rate, fees, timing and any intermediary deductions. Confirm the recipient details with the receiving institution. For a property purchase, agree the payment instructions and evidence with your independent adviser and the banks before sending money. This guide does not impose a universal requirement to route every property payment through the buyer’s own Cyprus account.
What bank guarantee does a visitor permit require?
The autonomous visitor checklist requests an original guarantee letter from a banking institution in the Republic of Cyprus, valid for ten years, in the applicant’s name from their own account, covering possible repatriation expenses. A copy is submitted for renewal. This is a requirement of that checklist; check your own residence category.
The Migration Department’s guarantee table sets amounts by country of origin. Examples in the published table are EUR 550 for Russia, EUR 350 for Israel or Lebanon, and EUR 850 for the United States, Canada or Australia. Check the current table and your route instead of applying one amount to everyone. The Department’s general page states validity of at least ten years.
Ask the issuing bank about its charge, collateral, account conditions and release procedure. Those commercial terms are distinct from the guarantee amount and immigration validity. Do not assume the guarantee amount is the bank’s fee or that collateral is automatically released on a permit renewal.
The visitor checklist’s transaction-statement requirement separately refers to a financial institution in Cyprus. Keep that wording distinct from its banking-institution guarantee requirement.
How can the guarantee be returned?
The official return procedure lists qualifying reasons, including:
- A new employer’s guarantee or declaration covering return costs replaces it.
- The person lawfully acquires another status, such as family-member status of a Cypriot or EU citizen.
- The person never ultimately arrives in Cyprus.
- The person leaves Cyprus and the Republic has incurred no removal costs.
Submit the signed request or written request with the file number or ARC and the guarantee number, through the channels described on the official page. It permits submission to the Migration Department or Police Aliens and Immigration Unit, including the listed postal, fax and signed scanned-email methods. The Department informs both the interested person and the bank by letter when returning a guarantee.
The published average is three months from the request, provided a valid return reason applies. It is not a promise of unconditional release within three months. If the guarantee was used for deportation costs, the page describes transfer of any remaining balance using the declared bank details.
Keep your request and supporting evidence, and confirm the bank’s release process. Follow up using the file and guarantee numbers if there is no update; there is no verified promise of an immediate branch or immigration-office resolution.
What should I do after opening the account?
Ask the bank how to update your address and other customer information, which evidence it accepts and whether the change can be completed digitally. Eurobank’s Basic Account guidance says customer information must be updated periodically under its due-diligence framework. Do not assume an app error or one customer’s experience describes every bank’s procedure.
For a car loan or other borrowing, request the current eligibility, documentation, total cost and security conditions for the specific product. Opening a payment account does not establish that credit will be approved.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to open a bank account in Cyprus?
Submitting an application is different from account approval and activation. Eurobank says it will assess the application and contact you. Bank of Cyprus evaluates applications under its policies and can reject them. Ask the chosen bank about its current process; there is no verified universal approval time.
Which Cyprus bank is best for expats?
Compare the account and application route that fit your residence, income and banking needs. Bank of Cyprus publishes mobile, alternative-form and international-account routes; Eurobank publishes account information and branch appointments. Alpha Bank has a transition page for former AstroBank customers. These pages do not establish a universal best bank or guaranteed acceptance.
Can I apply without a Cyprus residence permit?
Ask the bank which route applies to your circumstances. Bank of Cyprus’s international account-opening page allows an individual to approach an International Banking Unit personally or through a local professional intermediary, with an account-opening questionnaire, enrolment form and the requested documents. This is not a guarantee of approval or a waiver of the bank’s checks.
